cobbler rapport
Cobbler rapport
Everyday thousands of people leave their humble abode
and you cannot but mull over where are they going, ‘they are heading to work
off course’ I told the shoe maker or rather the cobbler when he ask that
question I can see in his eyes the future of the population, here in Nigeria we
use the phrase shoe maker which is a typical Nigerian English. The six cobblers
sit in adjacent arrangement, meet anyone of the six and mend your shoe, ‘ “Aboki”
my friend, shine my shoe, use kiwi for it,’ “oga” boss this your shoe na big man shoe” ‘thank you just make it shiny’ “your money na 50 naira” ‘ say what #50 is too much because you use
kiwi’ “ na so now kiwi cost for market”
kiwi is very expensive he says ‘you want
to use my money to feed your children begging for money at the railway
side’ “no money for Lagos na why then
they beg” money is hard to come by in Lagos that’s why they are begging ‘ you
don’t have money to take of them and you impregnate their mother’ “na poverty make me give their mama belle”
poverty makes impregnate their mother ‘poverty is a terrible thing damn’ I said
to myself “ oga wetin do you for this
neck na tattoo or juju” boss what’s around your neck is it tattoo or African
magic ‘no is money ritual “we re” mad man’ I said ‘give my shoe let me go’ “ha
oga you don vest” boss you are annoyed. I can’t help but say this his winning
the conversation, I don’t know why I start the cheap chat, but there is a
reason for every conversation you win some you lose some is the normal
situation in life, but I don’t want this small boy to win or control my
thinking but it’s all my fault next time I shut my mouth but is camouflage he
should not have call me to shine my shoe, if I had I known his good in
discussion my distance should have been clear from him damn they got me sorry I
mean he got me. Maybe he have more surprise for me in his shoe box if he does,
there will be no one to help because they are all after that thing, long life
everyone.
